With these two sums $13,000 and $12,000 together with
what he made from his profession, which dwindled down to between X2,000 and 83,000 a year while his annual family expenses amounted to between 29,000 and $10,000, he existed till the middle of last year when the whole amount was exhausted, and since then he was entirely dependent on Mr. Au for loans to keep himself and family. In addition to family expenses his illness increased his expendi- ture and prevented him from taking any work. His income for 1913 was about $2,000 and for the half year in 1914 only £375.
Besides Mr. Au's assistance Mr.S.V.Tso's paid for his office rent since the beginning of 1912 and also gave him the services of his clerks. However his friends were hoping that when the Kowloon Bay Reclamation achame became materialised Sir Kai would be able to right himself again. The origin of this scheme was as follows:-
In 1912 Sir Kai suggested to his friends the Reclamation of Kowloon Bay with a view of developing it into a settlement for Chinese in order to relieve the congestion and overcrowding in Hongkong occasioned by the Revolution in China. Messrs.Au, Cheung and Tso strongly supported the scheme and got their friends to take an interest in it; also caused a rough survey of the site to be made. But as the site was then not available the matter was temporarily dropped until June this year when Sir Kai was informed by the Government that the scheme may be proceeded with. A private company was at once formed witha capital of $1,000,000 divided into 50 shares of $20,000 each. All the shares had been taken up and r.Osborne Little, Architect, was instructed to make a detailed survey of the site and a careful estimate and report. This was being done since the beginning of June last but up to the present time it is not yet completed. By this scheme, if fructified, Sir Kai would be made a lanaging Director of the company with a competent salary and be entitled to one share of the company free. It was also proposed that all shareholders should receive free from the company a piece of the reclaimed
